Ayurveda Lifestyle Amalaki

About Amalaki

The fruit of the Amalaki tree (Emblica officinalis) is an amazingly useful Ayurvedic herb. It is traditionally used to improve digestion and elimination, while nourishing and strengthening the body.

Amalaki is one of the three ingredients in the most widely used Ayurvedic formula - Triphala. Considered a general panacea for almost all imbalances, Triphala is excellent for detoxifying and rejuvenating the body. Amalaki is generally taken in place of Triphala by those with excess heat in the digestive tract. This may be indicated by gastritis, colitis, ulcers, heartburn or acid reflux. Working to expel excess heat from the body, Amalaki acts as a natural anti inflammatory that soothes and protects the tissues of the digestive tract. It gently detoxifies the body by purifying the blood and supporting healthy, regular elimination.

Amalaki is also a potent rejuvenative for the entire body. It is said to stimulate the production of red blood cells, enhance cellular regeneration, increase lean body mass and support proper function of the liver, spleen, heart and lungs. It has also been used to improve eyesight, strengthen the bones and teeth, and cause hair and nails to grow. It improves the digestive fire, maintains a healthy blood sugar level and is a rich natural source of antioxidants.

Amalaki is the main ingredient in the traditional Ayurvedic jam called chyavanprash. This tasty remedy has been used for centuries as a way to deliver the healing benefits of Amalaki deep into the tissues. For more information on chyavanprash click here.

Our Amalaki fruit is grown exclusively on certified organic farms. The fresh, ripe fruit is harvested at the optimal time using environmentally sustainable methods that are sensitive to the long term health of the trees and their surrounding ecosystems.

Amalaki is available as a bulk powder or in tablets. The powder is generally used to make a tea, while the tablets provide a more convenient option for administration. Whichever form you choose, you will find Amalaki to be highly effective.

A traditional rejuvenative used to cleanse and nourish the bodily tissues. Balancing for all doshas, especially Pitta.*

Ayurvedic Energetics:

Dosage: 1/4-1/2tsp in warm water before meals or bedtime. Since amalaki is very astringent, it initially makes your mouth dry. The effect is temporary however. Shortly thereafter, it provokes release of saliva. Finally, amalaki tastes sweet. To minimize dryness in the mouth, brew as a tea then strain. Or, mix with a bit of honey.

4oz is approximately one month's supply.

Usage

1/4-1/2 tsp 2x/daily with warm water or as directed by your practitioner. View these general guidelines for taking herbs.

How would one use the fresh amalaki. I have seen it in Indian grocery stores

You can simply eat it. Often Indian groceries stores will have dried ones as well.
