The History of Sandwiches
The modern sandwich is a newfangled invention by the earl of Sandwich, a british lord named John Mantague who was also a pathological gambler. John invented the sandwich while gambling away the long hours of the night. All he needed to survive was bread, meat, cheese and alcohol. When hungry, he would call to the bartender, "Hey matie, give me a slice of bread and a hunk of meat". Obviously he did not have a very healthy intention behind this invention. Eventually, his friends starting requesting, "I'll have what the earl of Sandwich is having." The rest is history and sandwiches remain a convenient food when people don't have time to attend to their health. There are several reasons why sandwiches are unhealthy:
- Sandwiches are a poor food combination. They generally combine wheat mixed with meat, raw food (lettuce) with cooked food (meat), and fermented food (cheese, sour cream, vinegar) with fresh. These combinations are very difficult to digest.
- They generally dry and eaten cold. Food should be adequately hydrated and more like a sauce or soup when consumed.
